Ambrose Lions Mens Volleyball Team 2017-18

Year at a Glance - Men's Volleyball

Despite high expectations for the Men’s Volleyball team in their fourth ACAC season, the Lions once again came up short against two familiar opponents: injuries and inexperience. Competing in the ACAC South, a division which produced both the Gold and Bronze medal winners in last year’s CCAA National Championships, the team knew they had their work cut out for them; when the dust settled after the end of the regular season in February, they had missed playoffs once again and finished the season 6th in the South.

The Men’s Basketball program continued to improve this season, finishing 10-11 and barely missing playoffs in a very competitive division. A stretch of tough losses near the end of the season put an end to the Lions’ playoff hopes, but Ambrose proved themselves as tough competition in only their 3rd ACAC season. Head Coach Neil Nystrom, now in his 5th season as bench boss, was awarded ACAC South Division Coach of the Year and Josh Daniel was recognized for his outstanding play with a South Division 2nd Team All Conference Award.

After making history last year with their first ever playoff appearance, the Ambrose Women’s Volleyball program continued its upward trajectory in the 2017/18 season. In what was their most successful ACAC season by a wide margin, the team went 14-10 and finished 4th in the regular season. The Lions fell in the ACAC quarterfinals to the defending (and eventually repeating) provincial champions the Lakeland Rustlers, but despite the early loss the ladies won their next two games to finish 5th overall.

It was a tough season for the Women’s Basketball team, though they started out strong with a home-opening win against Briercrest, 67-55. That game would be their last trip to the win column; despite several close games against St. Mary’s, Briercrest, and Olds, the Lions finished their third ACAC season 1-20.

The ACAC has gone through times of transition the past couple of years with the sport of Futsal, moving to a mulit-tournament format to large year end Championship.  Therefore without an ACAC league to play in consistently, the Women’s Futsal team entered in the Calgary United Soccer Association’s Futsal league and were able to play against highly competitive teams on a weekly basis.  While barely missing the league playoffs (going 3-5-4 in league play), they were able to hone their skills and develop chemistry before heading to the Championships
