Lions Stun Clippers In Four Sets, Complete Weekend Sweep

After a come-from-behind 5th set victory last night, the Ambrose Lions took control of their own destiny on Saturday afternoon and beat the Clippers in four sets. Graduating 5th year leftside Mady Kerr was Ambrose’s Player of the Game, while 1st year middle Faith Buhler was Clippers POG.

Despite an improved performance from the Briercrest middle hitters, Ambrose’s attackers returned the favour and took control of the match early on. Briercrest made up the deficit and the match was neck-and-neck until the final points, when an attack from Kerr rolled off the tape and down on the court to seal up the 27-25 victory.

Lions leading scorer Willow Lewington was in top form tonight, scoring 16 kills and putting up 3 blocks over the match. The Lions relied on her presence in the middle, as well as Kerr and Julia Kemper on the outside to put up the majority of the home team’s points. Clippers leftside Becky Garner had 11 kills, helping bring the set to a nail-biting finish once again; up 24-23, Lewington’s attack went off the block and out for a 2-0 Lions lead.

Briercrest struck back in the third set. Buhler and Mikayla Benterud, in the middle for the Clippers, both had 7 kills, while the Harder sisters (Mia and Reece) scored 6 and 9 respectively. After serving runs from Kaitlyn Dyck and Buhler, the Clippers took the set 25-22.

Indicative of these evenly-matched teams, the 4th set stayed very close until the very end. With a chance to clinch the 3rd seed, Ambrose shifted into high gear late in the set and took at 23-20 lead. In the front row for the Lions was the senior, Mady Kerr, and her final swing in a regular-season home game was a kill off the arms of the defense and out the back to finish the match and lock up the ACAC South 3rd seed heading into playoffs.

The Lions will host the ACAC Provincial tournament next weekend, facing off against North 2nd seed the Lakeland Rustlers in the quarterfinals. Head to the Lions Den or catch all the action live on acactv.ca!
