No Love Lost between local Rivals, Lions and Trojans

It was not all roses tonight in the Lion's Den, as local rival SAIT came to Ambrose to challenge the Lions on Valentine's Day.  These two teams have a history of playing intense tightly contested games which has resulted in some bad blood in the past.  Tonight, saw both teams play a high energy, back and forth game with a lot of pride on the line, but thankfully no extracurricular activities took place this Valentine's Day.

SAIT would get their largest lead (3) of the night halfway through the first quarter, however this game, still wasn't one that the Lions ran away with.  At half it was still anyone's game as the Lions lead by only 5.

Even with 7'0 ft, Taliik Ross playing for the Trojans and the Lions without one of their top rebounders Nhial Phillip, the Lions won the rebounding batter, 47-38, something they rarely do.  The Lions also shot significantly better than the Trojans from behind the arc, shooting 44.8% to the Trojans 23.3%.

The 3rd quarter saw Ambrose start to put their stamp on the game.  Sylvan Lombo and Riley Cordwell, both tallied a quarter high 8 points, contributing to the 29 points scored as a team.   Isaac Gray also found has touch, adding 5 of his 10 points.  Uncharacteristically the Trojans struggled from 3 in the quarter as Conner, Yellow Horn and Haux went a combined 0-7.

In the 4th quarter, the Lions again continued to chip away and grow their lead.  Halfway through the 4th they got their lead to 22, and never looked back.

The win for the Lions is their 2nd win of the season against CCAA Nationally Ranked teams and results in them winning their 3 game season series against SAIT, 2-1.

Next week is another huge weekend for the Lions as they face the Red Deer College Kings and try to clinch their spot in the ACAC playoffs for the second year in a row.
