Recap of Ambrose Hosting ACAC Futsal Championships
The Ambrose University Athletics department was excited and anxious to host the 2017 ACAC Futsal Championships on March 2-5. Excited for the chance to showcase our own Lion’s Futsal teams and amazing school, but also anxious as this was the biggest championships that the ACAC would have this year.
With 16 teams coming to campus, things were definitely full but the school worked well together to pull off an exciting weekend. From parking to having to host supper in 2 rooms, things were overflowing at times…but so was the excitement. The Championships last 4 days to be able to fit all the games into a schedule and the athletes put on a great display of skill, heart, and exciting action. The Lion’s also hosted a Skills Competition. This was a new idea that turned out to be an overwhelming success. The competition contained four events which were Accuracy Shooting, Freestyle, Team Relay, and a 2 vs 2 game. Athletes competed for not only their school but also for their division as the ACAC has a South and North. The South Division ended up winning the contest 6 to 1. Winners were: Accuracy Shooting- Hannah Costa (Lakeland) and Marcus Poisson (Med Hat), Freestyle- Jasmine Flett (Olds) and Lucas Reimer (Ambrose), Team Relay was won by Medicine Hat, and both 2 vs 2 games were won by the south.
LADY LION’S PERFORM AT HIGH LEVEL
Our own Lion’s teams were very excited heading into the competition. Day 1 saw our women win 6-2 over Olds, while our men started slow with a 7-1 loss. On Day 2, our men lost a heartbreaker 7-6 to Lethbridge. They were down by 5 goals and battled back and came so close in this game. Our women had a solid game winning 9-3, also vs LCC. On day 3, our teams played Medicine Hat and the women lost 4-1, while the men lost another tough game 5-4 where they had another valiant comeback. This put our women into the semi-finals and they played a solid game but ended up losing to Augustana in OT. This was a very exciting game that was back and forth and filled with amazing plays. Our women ended 4th after a loss to Lakeland in the Bronze Medal game but overall they had a great performance. Head Coach Paul Barnett had this to say. “All in all, I think the Futsal program did really well representing Ambrose at the ACAC Championships.
The guys did quite well, with 2 very close games that could have led to them moving on. I am proud of the men becoming unified in their brotherhood on and off the pitch this season, and it was definitely noticeable. For the women, I am proud of how they displayed their character on the pitch and led each other with true boldness in their style of play. I am excited for the future that this program has ahead of them.” Also congrats go out to Ambrose’s Bethany Herman on winning a Championships All Star Award and to Lucas Reimer for winning the Freestyle Event in the Skills Competition.
MEDICINE HAT WINS IT ALL
The Medicine Hat Rattlers program showed very well on the weekend, as both their Men’s and Women’s programs took Gold. Final Results had for the women went 1) Med Hat, 2) Augustana, 3) Lakeland, 4) Ambrose and for the men it was 1) Med Hat, 2) Keyano, 3) Lakeland, 4) Olds.
