English Language Requirements

If your primary language isn’t English, you must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 83 on the Internet-based test (IBT) and 560 on the paper-based test (PBT)*
  • International English Language Testing System Academic (IELTS Academic) with a minimum score of 6.5*
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum score of 85*
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) with a minimum score of 70*
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with a minimum score of 58*
  • A passing grade in English 30-1 or its equivalent

** Official test scores must be sent directly to Ambrose University by the testing body and the tests must have been taken within two years of your application.

This requirement may be waived at the discretion of the University in cases where a student has attended an equivalent institution in North America or can demonstrate English proficiency by other means.

English Language Requirements for Chinese Language Programs

Master’s Degree Programs

If your first language isn’t English, you must demonstrate proficiency in the English language in order to gain admission into a degree program. You must demonstrate your English proficiency by one of the following:

  • Graduation from a college or university where English was the medium of instruction
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of either 500 on the paper-based test (PBT) or 61 on the Internet-based test (IBT)
  • International English Language Testing System Academic (IELTS Academic) with a minimum score of 5.0

Certificate and Diploma Programs

If you’re applying to a certificate or diploma programs, you don’t need to provide proof of English proficiency for admission because the language of instruction for these programs is Chinese. However, if you want to enrol in a course that is taught in English or to change to a Master’s degree program, you’ll need to provide proof of English proficiency as stated above.
