Regarding course load for the first year, consider the following variables:

  • 5 courses, or 15 credits, may work well for students with a strong academic history and minimal commitments outside of the classroom, such as a part-time job, athletics, church involvement or family commitments
  • Beginning with 3-4 courses (9-12 credits) allows for an easier transition to university for many students, and allows additional time for other commitments
  • 9 credits is typically the minimum requirement for full-time student status, with implications for loans and other funding
  • 16.5 credits are the maximum allowed in any one semester
