A Letter for Students About Financial Literacy Resources
Hello,
My name is Cayla Linaker and I am from the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) Outreach Program.
The CRA understands that many students have been struggling with financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even if students didn’t make any income last year, that’s okay! We still encourage them to file their income tax and benefit return, so they don’t miss out on a refund, benefit, or credit that they may be entitled to receive.
To help students learn about Canada’s tax system and how to complete their tax return, the CRA Outreach Program offers free services and information geared towards understanding taxes. Outreach Officers (like myself) are also available to provide a virtual, one-hour presentation on Students and Financial Literacy. We have coordinated these sessions with high schools, post secondary institutions and International Student organizations, throughout the province. The presentation includes a question and answer period and covers the following topics:
- The Canadian Tax System
- Social Insurance Numbers (SIN)
- What happens to your pay cheque?
- Understanding your T4 slip
- Refundable tax credits vs non-refundable tax credits
- Tax credits for students
- Ways to do your taxes
- Digital Services
- Scams
We can be as flexible as possible when it comes to your school’s schedule and setting a date and time for a presentation. Students can participate online by clicking on a registration link, if they are learning at-home in light of the ongoing pandemic. Alternatively, an instructor can display the presentation in a classroom setting with the assistance of an Outreach officer, who will facilitate virtually.
