In honour of Black History Month, meet Ambrose student Afope Sanyade

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a celebration and appreciation of the voices and works of all Black individuals who have contributed to the world’s flourishing. As I grew up in Canada as an immigrant, I saw my parents endure and overcome barriers in their schools and workplaces due to their race. Black History month gives me space to lament the existence of those barriers and to celebrate those, like my parents, who have achieved transformative feats in my community by transcending those barriers.

Who is one of your Heroes and why?

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. FRK advocated for African women’s right to education and voting under colonial rule. She deserves to be celebrated in February because she was one of the few who pioneered the notion that the success of an African country is intricately connected to how well the government honours and treats the works of African women. FRK is also the mother of Fela Kuti, a legendary African musician that fused Yorùbá beats and American Jazz to create a new music genre called ‘Afrobeat.'
