Travel with Biology
Dredge for marine life, examine tide pools and study intertidal zones on Vancouver Island through our partnership with the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. The Biology program also conducts ecological study trips to places like Florida, and Costa Rica.
Biology Travel - Belize 2017
Starting in Western Belize, the Spring 2017 Travel course looked at the biodiversity of the region – specifically the jungle flora and fauna. The class talked to researchers about the conservation efforts in the region and participate in some of their projects.
Another aspect of the course was to study the Mayan culture with a scientific slant on their agriculture methods, engineering, and astronomy. We climbed the original temples of several archeological sites in both Belize and Guatemala.
The class went on two caving expeditions in Belize and finished with four days at a Marine Science Research Station on Tobacco Caye (a very small island consisting of the station, a few houses, and many palm trees). We spent our days snorkeling the coral reefs, and visiting the Smithsonian Research station. The students were amazed to swim with manatee, and follow giant eagle rays in the water.
