Ambrose University invites applications for a part-time, fixed term Independent Contractor Counsellor position.

Important Information:

  • The Independent Contractor Counsellor must have a GST number and WCB coverage.
  • The Independent Contractor Counsellor is required to submit invoices monthly.
  • This is a fixed term contract with no expectation of extension.

At Ambrose, the Counsellor plays a pivotal role in supporting the mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of students by incorporating Christian values and principles with psychologically therapeutic modalities into their support service.

Start Date: August 15, 2024
End Date: April 30, 2024
Hours per week: up to 20 hours (16 hours of direct counselling, 4 hours of group facilitation)

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide individual counselling sessions to students dealing with a range of issues. The issues include academic stress, interpersonal conflicts, anxiety, depression, grief, and spiritual concerns.
  • Conduct group counselling sessions addressing relevant topics such as identity, relationships, anxiety reduction, emotional regulation, grief, faith exploration, and coping strategies.
  • In collaboration with faculty and staff, provide holistic support to students. This includes referrals to appropriate resources both on and off campus.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Wellness Coordinator, provide support to on-campus workshops, seminars, and training sessions aimed at promoting mental health awareness and well-being within the Ambrose community.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of counselling sessions in compliance with ethical standards and Ambrose policies.
  • Integrate a Christian worldview into all aspects of counselling practice and interaction with students.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in counselling, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • License as a counsellor/clinical therapist or psychologist in the province of Alberta required.
  • 5 years of experience in providing counselling services to individuals from diverse backgrounds, preferably within a higher education setting.  

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to build rapport, establish trust, and maintain confidentiality with students and colleagues.
  • Able to lead and facilitate groups.
  • Able to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Personal Characteristics

  • Must have a quality of spirit that will be reflected in a growing relationship with God and interpersonal relationships.
  • Sensitive to the unique needs and experiences of post-secondary students. This includes issues related to faith, identity, culture, and mental health.
  • Committed to promoting holistic development and academic excellence within a Christ-centered community.

Other

  • An understanding of the Christian experience, theology, values, and ethics. Able to integrate these principles into counselling practice.

  • A compensation package commensurate with education and experience is available.
  • Employment is contingent upon satisfactory background criminal check and academic transcripts.
