Considering a Practicum Student?
Body
Behavioural Science (BHS) is:
- Fully accredited by the Private Colleges Accreditation Board and the Minister of Learning, Alberta
- An interdisciplinary program encompassing the fields of psychology and sociology
- A 3-year BA: Behavioural Science (Concentration), or a 4-year BA: Behavioural Science (Major)
BHS Practicum is:
- Mandatory and a key component of the BHS program
- A service-learning course
- 100 hours in the fall semester for all BHS students
- 150 additional hours in the winter semester for students in the 4-year BHS Major only
- “An educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets community needs.” (Bringle & Hatcher)
- An opportunity for students to “…reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of the course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.” (Bringle & Hatcher)
Students Require:
- Meaningful and practical work within the organization
- 100 hours in the fall and 150 hours in the winter above and beyond any formal training sessions
- Direct supervision including meetings with a supervisor, ongoing constructive feedback and formal evaluations (no specific supervisor credentials required)
- Training and orientation to the organization including policies and procedures
- An active contract with the organization (established when finalizing a practicum placement)
