Please Apply Here for a Peer Tutor position.
Peer tutors working for Student Academic Success will help other students develop their subject-specific knowledge (i.e. knowledge of chemistry, Greek, statistics, philosophy, economics. etc.) or their skills in academic writing, research, and communication. Subject-specific tutors work within their own areas of academic expertise, usually supporting courses within their academic major or minor. Tutors who work with academic writing, research, and communication can come from any discipline but must demonstrate excellent literacy and information literacy skills. In addition, all tutors will assist others with general academic and study skills.
To be eligible to serve as a peer tutor, a candidate must have completed at least 30 credits of post-secondary study and have a strong overall grade point average. Peer tutors will report to the appropriate Learning Services Coordinator.
The peer tutor will:
- Attend tutor training, as scheduled by the coordinator.
- Participate in regular tutor meetings, as scheduled by the coordinator.
- Assist students via one-to-one tutoring sessions (drop-in or scheduled; online or in person) or group study sessions. Tutors may have set hours (especially when offering drop-in tutoring or leading study sessions) or may have a variable schedule, depending on both the tutor's availability and student needs. The tutor's schedule is confirmed at the beginning of each term. Hours will depend on student demand.
- Track student usage and satisfaction with the services provided by Student Academic Success.
- Prepare learning resources for students.
- Assist in the promotion of Student Academic Success.
- Engage in self-assessment and professional development, particularly in the area of tutoring pedagogy.
Duties and responsibilities performed within one’s capabilities that do not constitute a major change may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of the supervisor either orally or in writing.
