Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I live in the Calgary area but I’m not a student. May I use this library?
    Normally, all patrons are welcome to use the Ambrose Library free of charge. Due to COVID-19, however, we are serving current Ambrose students, faculty and staff only at this time.

  2. I'm not a current student but I am an alum. May I use the library?
    Since the library is serving only current Ambrose students, faculty and staff at this time, you are not able to enter the building or to request books. However, as an alum you do have access to our ATLAS database. Please contact our Alumni Office by phone 403-410-2923, email alumni@ambrose.edu or visit the alumni webpage to get a login.

The following FAQs pertain to current Ambrose students:
  1. Is the library open on weekends?
    The library is currently closed on Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays. Please check here for up-to-date information on the library’s hours and services.

  2. How do I access my library account?
    Go to the library's homepage and click on the "My Library Account" button. Enter your Ambrose student credentials (same login that you use to access your Ambrose email). You can use your account to make book requests, track due dates and renew items.

  3. How do I check out books?
    The stacks are currently closed for browsing, due to COVID-19. However, you can access physical items in our circulating collection by:

    • Visiting us in person during our open hours -- we will be glad to retrieve books for you and check them out to your library account.

    • Making a request for hold and pickup by logging into your library account.

      • Once you are logged in and have found an item in the catalogue, click on the title for that item and then click on the blue "Request" button in the "Get it" section. If this button is not displayed in the catalogue record for the item, then it is not requestable.

      • We will check out requested items to your library account and place them on the pickup shelf in the library entry within 24 hours or 1 business day.

      • Please note that if a requested item is currently out on loan, it will take longer for us to process your request.

  4. I’ve checked out some books. How long can I keep them?
    The check-out period for books from the circulating collections is generally 2 weeks. For further information see the Borrowing page.

  5. May I check out audiovisual materials like CD’s and DVD’s?
    Yes, these also have a 2-week loan period.

  6. How do renew my books?
    Books can be renewed online by clicking on My Account in the library catalogue and using your Ambrose credentials to log in. Items that have had holds placed on them may not be renewed, nor can your materials be renewed if you owe $10 or more in fines. You can also call, email or visit us during our open hours to renew.

  7. Are my course textbooks available for loan?
    Any required course text that is on Reserve is not currently available for loan, due to COVID-19 and associated quarantining regulations. However, if you need to read a specific chapter or set of pages, you may request an electronic scan of a portion (up to 10% per book). To make a request, fill in this form and we will send you a scanned copy within 1-2 business days.

  8. Where can I return my books? 
    You can return items 24/7 in the book return bin just outside the library doors.

  9. How much are overdue fines?
    For regular items (anything with a two–week loan period), overdue fines are $1.00 per item for each day that extends past the initial loan period. Reserve items also have overdue fines charged at the rate of $1.00 each hour for each item that has exceeded the initial loan period. Overdue recalled items are subject to a fine of $5.00 per day overdue. 

  10. Are any study rooms available?
    At this time, study rooms are closed to patron use until further notice.

  11. I'm a student at Ambrose. How do I get a computer account?
    All students are assigned a computer account and can activate it by visiting the IT Department or calling 403-410-2930.

  12. Is there a photocopier or printer I can use?
    The library printer has been moved to the second floor of the main building and is located near the Seminary Lounge. The cost is 10¢ per page for black and white copies, and you may load printing money on to your account at the Finance Office, 9:00-3:00 Monday-Friday. For colour printing, please visit the Circulation Desk during the library's open hours, and be prepared to pay 50¢ per page (cash only).
